John Oliver, host of HBO’s “Last Week Tonight” has become somewhat of an icon among left-wing pseudo-intellectuals, and it’s not hard to see why. Every week the guy goes on his show, shits on conservatives in a British accent, and is praised by liberals as some sort of brilliant individual. I’ll admit, I enjoy his program. While I disagree with his (more so his audience’s) politics, that doesn’t mean the guy isn’t funny. He is. Hell, I’d go as far to say he’s hilarious.
That’s what he is, a comedian. He makes people laugh.
Yet, for some reason, many people think that Oliver is this edgy host daring to speak truth to power… when really he’s just kind of a douche. Look, the guy’s gotta eat. He knows that his audience loathes everything about conservatives (mostly because they are told to loath them), and he plays to that, but his latest stunt is just petty, if not downright sad.
Mike Pence’s daughter had written a children’s book about a bunny, and is donating the proceeds to help combat human trafficking. The book is aimed to educate kids on the job of the vice president. All of those things seem good, to most sane people. I’d like to think people are for kids reading, as well as trying to prevent them from being trafficked. Of course, Oliver couldn’t let the Pence family get away with something like that.
In response to the book, Oliver dedicated an entire show to ripping on Pence for his association with a guy who thought conversion therapy was ok. While the VP has denied being a supporter of such a thing, Oliver says the he simply doesn’t believe him.
Well, if John Oliver doesn’t believe it, then it can’t be true.
As if spending a half hour on the dude’s affiliations with other people wasn’t sad enough, Oliver and his staff decided that they too would publish a children’s book about the Pence family’s rabbit being gay.
This is the type of thing you’d see from a middle schooler. “Hey, let’s make this a gay story, hahaha…” Now, the book is number 1 on Amazon. I’m not going to make this some sort of “gay agenda” piece, because that’s too easy. No, this is nothing more than Oliver pandering to his audience by trying to upset those on the right.
My question is, what did Mike Pence do to make John Oliver hate him so much? Aside from having an (R) next to his name, has Pence done anything incredibly damning?
I’d like to think it was a slow week, and this is what led to the bit, but there are bombs going off in Austin. We had teachers forcing kids to walk out of class, or face punishment. There’s enough going on that SHOULD have garnered some attention, but Mike Pence’s daughter’s book is the thing Oliver wanted to focus on. That’s fine, it’s his show. The issue I have is with his followers. They think that this is some incredible way to stick it to the administration, or support the small percentage of homosexuals in our society, or something along those lines. The worst part of it all is that they think they are morally superior. In their world, anything that offends the VP is worth doing.
Maybe I’m in the minority, but this is just sad. Sure, “Last Week Tonight” is donating the book’s proceeds to fighting AIDS (how retro), but they could’ve done that with literally anything they decided to make, and sell. Hell, they could’ve just said “donate to help gay people,” but they know that liberals don’t like to just give money without getting anything.
Perhaps it’s a lack of creativity on their part. I write children’s stories, and coming up with characters, and a narrative is a difficult task. They saw something that was already done, and said “let’s make it gay”, and now they have a top seller.
(Take note, anyone with a business of your own. So long as you give people an opportunity to virtue signal, you will always have customers.)
There’s no need to deconstruct the book because it’s about a gay rabbit… There’s nothing I can say that makes a book about a gay bunny sound appealing, because it’s a freaking bunny. Wherever you fall on the political spectrum, hopefully you can recognize how stupid this whole thing is (I apologize for even giving it this much attention). And for those of you who bought the book, you’re an idiot.
