Rick and Morty Is DEAD…And I Couldn’t Be Happier

“Rick and Morty” has yet to be ordered for a 4^th season and hasn’t even been written, according to it’s creator Dan Harmon. Responding to an unsurprisingly obnoxious tweet from an entitled “Rick and Morty” fan on Twitter, Harmon mentioned that network Adult Swim had not yet ordered a 4^th season and suggested that as the principle reason why work has not started on the writing process. Although given the aggressive nature of “Rick and Morty” fans and their tactless approach to social media, it’s no surprised that Harmon may not be enthusiastic about continuing the series. There have also been rumors about a lack of cohesion among writers and producers and a somewhat tense work environment. It’s not outside the realm of possibility that some of these rumors are true, as Dan Harmon has had trouble in the past.

Harmon’s erratic behavior got the best of him in 2012, when he was fired as showrunner of his own NBC creation “Community”. Sony Pictures TV had first considered the move the year prior during Season 3. Reports of Harmon showing up hours late to work, all night drinking sessions and sleeping on the job were commonplace by this time. There was even a Tublr account at one point called “Sleepy Harmon”. In his own words, Harmon is a “ninja of alcoholism” and the erratic behavior was becoming harder to sweep under the rug. At one point, the writer even disappeared for two days to attend SF Sketchfest. All of these incidents, combined with Harmon’s rebellious and brash behavior, led to some writers reportedly planning to quit if he returned to the show. Without Harmon’s comedic brilliance at the helm, the show suffered and he was asked to return despite the controversy.

In his defense it does seem that Dan Harmon has made significant steps towards amending and atoning for his past behavior. He recently came out on his podcast as well as social media apologizing for some of his past actions. As the #MeToo movement began to gain steam, Harmon himself recalled crossing the lines of acceptable behavior with employees. While he kept it vague for the most part, eventually a former writer for “Community” outed Harmon as having harassed her when they worked together on the NBC show. The exchange between Dan Harmon and writer Megan Ganz is still up on Twitter. They have since seemed to bury the hatchet and put it behind them.

Not since the band Tool has a more obnoxious fan base ever existed in the explored universe. “Rick and Morty” fans are utterly detestable human beings. Grown men and women cosplaying as a wacky cartoon scientist as they brawl in McDonald’s parking lots over Szechuan Sauce. Genuinely believing that taking bong hits and laughing at science fiction based cartoons makes them somehow smarter than the average human being. They’ve even come full circle in their insanity and now hurl daily abuse at the person who created the thing they claim to love so much. In fact, the fan base has turned Harmon so wholeheartedly against them that he no longer even hides his disdain, despite having made millions from the show. If “Rick and Morty” doesn’t come back, it will be because it’s fan base doesn’t deserve a 4^th season. You did this to yourselves.
